Created by Kaitlynn Schultz on 5/24/2022 3:26:00 PM

This session will a screening of the film “Out From the Wings” and a Q&A talk back with the films' creator Michael Montoya.

"Out From the Wings" is a documentary film which analyzes the strictly defined and segregated binary gender roles most often enforced in dance, the roles biological female and male dancers are expected to play, and how the expectation of adhering to these roles affects LGBTQIA+ dancers. Consisting primarily of interview footage of lesbian, gay, nonbinary, and transgender dancers ranging in age from 18 to 72, the film addresses how rigid, unrealistic stereotypical images permeate dance training, auditioning and performance. The dancers share not only how this affects them professionally, but how it affects them in their personal relationships with other dancers, choreographers, and company directors as well.

Journal of Dance Education Call for Papers
Special Issue: Mental, Emotional, and Physical Health and Wellness of Dance Teachers and Students - Deadline: October 20, 2022
Guest Editor: Robin Collen, PhD (  The physical and psychological health of dance teachers and their students has been an ever-present topic of concern in dance education. Dance teachers and students often engage for many hours of strenuous physical, mental, and emotional activity during the day—such as taking or teaching technique and other movement classes, participating in cross-training activities (at a gym and elsewhere), working on curriculum planning or attending academic classes, and mentoring students, colleagues, and peers—followed by evening rehearsals. They need ways to sustain their stamina, stay healthy, and avoid injury. Also, maintaining motivation and a positive attitude can be challenging in the face of both internal and external pressures.

Many of you have heard about the passing of Ann Hutchinson Guest at age 103. Our hearts go out to all who knew Ann, and particularly those closest to her in the dance notation community. To say she lived an incredible life is an understatement! NDEO has benefited much from her scholarship and joyous enthusiasm for life! As the 217th member, joining NDEO in 1998... one could say she was a founding member of NDEO. Since 2010, Ann has attended every NDEO Conference but one. She has been a steady joyous figure each year, known by our members for not only her research and scholarly accomplishments, but also her welcoming smile and signature sequin gold cap.  In 2003 Ann was awarded the NDEO Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2014 she began hosting her annual Dance Archaeology Intensive sessions at NDEO Conferences.

Apr15 Join Us In-Person for the 2022 NDEO National Conference
Created by Kaitlynn Schultz on 4/15/2022 1:51:00 PM

NDEO invites dance educators to come together in person this October to spark creativity, embrace the joy of communal experience, and hold space for the myriad ways we have shifted as dancers, educators, choreographers, and humans as we’ve moved through the last few years. We welcome you to take what you need and share what you can, supporting individual needs through community practice. Take your place at the crowded table, connecting with others to find joy in shared creation, process pain and loss, and leave with new perspectives that will help propel the field of dance education forward.

Held annually in the fall, a typical in-person NDEO National Conference includes three full days of over 250 workshops, master classes, panel and paper presentations, social events and performances. A full day of pre-conference intensives precedes the official start of conference. The full conference schedule is generally released online over the summer before that year's conference.
